The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) handles the December 2024 SASSA Child Grant. This grant supports families with children who need financial help. The money comes from taxpayers and helps families care for their kids.
If you do not know how the SASSA Child Grant works, here is a simple guide. SASSA offers three types of childcare grants. You can only apply for one grant at a time. Not all grants may fit your family’s situation or your child’s needs. Below, you will find details about each grant to help you choose the right one.
December 2024 SASSA Child Grant Details
To apply for the SASSA Children’s Grant, your newborn must have documents from the Department of Home Affairs. Without these documents, the application cannot move forward.
As per the SASSA CEO, about 13 million mothers in South Africa now get the R530 monthly Child Support Grant. This is the most popular grant, even more than the SRD Grant. It is also the most expensive welfare program in the country’s history.
If a mother registers her newborn for this grant and receives it until the child turns 18, the government spends over R1,34,480 per child. This amount includes an expected 5% yearly increase in the grant, showing how costly it is to maintain this program.
Apply Now for SASSA Child Grants
The Department of Social Development urges young mothers to apply for the SASSA Child Grant. In October 2024, the agency asked mothers to register their newborns soon after birth. This will ensure financial support for children during their early years.

How to Apply for Newborn’s ID and December 2024 SASSA Child Grant
To get the December 2024 SASSA Child Grant for your newborn, your child must be registered with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). SASSA and DHA databases must match for the process to move forward.
The DHA advises parents to get their child’s unabridged birth certificate and ID quickly. Delaying this process can make your child ineligible for the SASSA grant.
Steps to Apply for Newborn’s ID and SASSA Grant
- Register Your Child with DHA
- Use the DHA’s eHome portal to register your child’s details.
- Once done, you will get the unabridged birth certificate and ID.
- Apply for the SASSA Children’s Grant
- After registration, visit the SASSA Services portal to book an appointment.
- Go to your nearest SASSA branch on the appointment date to complete the application.

Complete these steps on time to avoid delays and ensure your newborn receives the necessary financial support.
